The Old City Basin

The Old City of Jerusalem is a world heritage site and is the center of attraction for tourists of many different faiths who come to visit the holy places and its many sites. The Jerusalem Development Authority restores, preserves and develops and maintains the Old City and the Old City Basin including: restoration of the Old City walls; restoration of the public space; restoration and security on the Mount of Olives; development, restoration and maintenance of open spaces; improvement of access to the Old City; building a landscaped promenade with viewing points. Also, the Authority is promoting a statutory plan to enable preservation on the one hand and development of private and public space on the other. The Authority is developing a long term tourist product in the Old City with the emphasis on night time tourism.

The government of Israel and the Jerusalem municipality have an investment plan for the Old City and the Old City Basin which is long term and based on the investment of hundreds of millions of shekels.

   
Preservation, Development and Maintenance
The Old City of Jerusalem is a world heritage site and is the center of attraction for tourists of many different faiths who come to visit the holy places and its many sites.
 
The Jerusalem Development Authority restores, preserves, develops and maintains the Old City and the Old City Basin, including:
  • Upgrading and building public infrastructures to enhance the economic potential and tourism
  • Improving the quality of life and the environment for all the residents of the Old City and visitors.
  • To ensure the preservation of the architectural cultural heritage of the Old City and the Old City Basin
  • Development of green areas
The Development Plan for the Old City
The government of Israel and the Jerusalem municipality have an investment plan for the Old City and the Old City Basin which is long term and based on the investment of hundreds of millions of shekels.
 
The Plan includes:
  • Restoration of the Old City walls
  • Restoration and security on the Mount of Olives
  • Development and restoration of the public space
  • Development, restoration and maintenance of open areas
  • Improving the access to the Old City
  • Raising the level of sanitation and maintenance of public spaces
  • Building a landscaped promenade with attractive viewing points
  • Development of the Gai Ben Hinom Promenade and completing the National Garden in Tzurim Valley
  • Renovation, preservation and development at the Valley of the Kings.
The Old City as a Tourism Product
The Jerusalem Development Authority is acting in accordance with the strategic plan for the promotion and development of the Old City as a   tourism product to maximize the economic potential and tourism in the Old City.
 

The Plan includes:

  • The preparation of a tourist management plan for the Old City
  • Development of signposts for tourists
  • The installation of lighting to illuminate historic and archeological properties; creating a route for night time walking tours
  • Development of an events program, with the emphasis on the night time tourist product
  • Promotion of events in the Old City Basin - Festival of Light, Festival of Tastes, Festival of Knights, Festival of Sounds
  • Branding the routes of walking tours, and using applications for cellular devices.
